The Cannes Festival has banned "selfies" from its famed red carpet this year, with the head of the event claiming that people posing for the snaps are cluttering the carpet.

When the prestigious film festival returns on May 13th for its 68th edition, don't expect to see the stars posing for selfies.

In fact, taking selfies has been banned by the director general of the festival, Thierry Frémaux.

Frémaux made the announcement on April 1st - but this was no April Fool's hoax.

"These horrible selfies make the red carpet terribly cluttered and disorganized," he said, reported French radio channel France Culture.

Last year's event saw many actors giving in to the temptation of a selfie on the red carpet, including French actress Lea Seydoux (above), Nabilla Benattia and the team of Expendables 3. Others included American actresses Rosario Dawson and Julianne Moore, and former Gossip Girl character and L’Oréal model Blake Lively.

Frémaux has been mulling the ban since December.

"What do all these self-pictures mean? I think it’s better to keep these memories in our heads. But I know this will be a difficult measure to take," he said.
