Grandparents put on disguises to snatch baby
Four members of the same family have each been sentenced to six months in jail after they dressed up in wigs and sunglasses and made off with a baby in southern Sweden.
The child’s parents had separated and a custody ruling was still pending when the baby’s mother, maternal grandparents and another family member decided to take matters into their own hands, local newspaper Värnamo Nyheter reported.
The quartet swooped when the baby was temporarily being cared for by its other grandmother, who sat with the child on her knee in a wicker chair on the terrace of her son’s house in Värnamo. The child’s father had gone to buy wipes when the abduction took place, the newspaper said.
Wearing wigs and sunglasses and with hoods pulled up over their heads, the baby snatchers grabbed the woman from behind and ripped the child out of her arms before fleeing the scene.
The four baby thieves then went into hiding for two nights before the mother contacted social services and the police.
All four were charged and a district court gave them suspended sentences. But the court of appeal has now ruled that the seriousness of the crime warrants jail time for the four family members.
