Emmylou Harris was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 and has excelled as a vocal artist for four decades.

She shares the 24th annual Polar Music Prize with the solo percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, according to an announcement made by the prize committee at Stockholm City Hall on Tuesday morning.

Glennie, who has been deaf since the age of 12, is also a three-time Grammy winner.

"My career and my life have been about listening in the deepest possible sense. Losing my hearing meant learning how to listen differently, to discover features of sound I hadn’t realized existed. Losing my hearing made me a better listener”.

Emmylou Harris has recorded more than 25 albums and has won 13 Grammy awards. She was inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

She has matched critical acclaim with commercial success, selling more that 15 million records.

Swedish group First Aid Kit, who eulogised Harris in their song 'Emmylou', were quick to congratulate her.
