A skier from Drøbak, south of Oslo, has won top billing on the website of Norway’s largest selling newspaper after he took what is mooted to be the first ‘Elk Selfie’ or ‘Elkie’ and posted it on Facebook.

“I was quite astonished,” Kristoffer Simonsen Ramskjell, an economist for the local municipality, told The Local of his new-found media fame. “It’s quite cool because VG is the biggest newspaper in Norway, so I’ve had a lot of attention.”

Ramskjell took his ‘Elkie’ when he encountered an Elk and its calf during an after work ski on Friday evening.

“Maybe the elk was used to skiers. It didn’t seem afraid and it was quite friendly and not caring about me at all,” he said. “It didn’t mind being photographed.”

Ramskjell explained that he had intended the photo as a joke, as it would go alongside photos posted by skiers of the pedestrians who walk on the track, ruining it for Nordic skiing enthusiasts.

“I thought this image would be a nice substitute for other pictures of people there on the the ski tracks,” he said.

Instead it was rapidly picked up by local media, before being published in VG.
