If recent economic developments have left Italians with an inferiority complex towards Germans, a new British medical study has given the men, at least, reason to stand tall.

According to scientists, Italian men have bigger penises than Germans but fall short of the French.

The detailed scientific study ruled that an average Italian man’s penis is 9.00cm (3.5 inches) when flaccid, slightly larger than the 8.60cm measured in Germany.

French men top the chart with 10.74cm, making them the most blessed out of all countries featured in the BJU International journal of urology study.

Researchers collated studies of penis size from around the world, with Italians falling just short of the global average of 9.16cm.

The average erect penis length was put at 13.12cm, although this was not covered in the Italy study.

The survey was a flop for Turkish men, who the study decided had the smallest penises - 6.80cm when flaccid - although the measurement jumped to 8.95cm and 9.30cm in two other studies in the country.

In news that will blow apart many an old wives' tale, the scientists confirmed that the size of a man’s feet, index finger or testicles could not be used to determine the size of a man’s penis.

The majority of men who suffer anxiety over the size of their penis were reassured by comparing themselves to others, although researchers warned some men could be negatively affected by the results.

According to US research which contributed to the new study, only 2.28 percent of the male population had penises so small they would qualify for a surgical enlargement. Overall just 0.14 percent of men have a micropenis, researchers said.

Another US study found that men were far less happy with the size of their penises than their female partners. Fifty-five percent of men said they were satisfied, compared to 85 percent of women reflecting on their partners.
