Renzi touched down in a football field in the Civitella area on Monday morning, while en route from Florence to Rome, La Repubblica reported.

The Italian premier, his staff and the helicopter crew escaped the emergency landing unhurt.

After bad weather put an end to his journey, Renzi was picked up by his security detail and driven to the Italian capital.

Massimiliano Dindalini, a local politician, joked about the “unexpected visit” from the prime minister.

“Dear Matteo Renzi, I understand the urgency, first of all of Italy, but the next time that you touch down in Civitella allow me the time to offer you a coffee,” he wrote on Facebook.
