The French are the least connected to social networks in all of Europe, according to a new EU survey released this week, and they are not into reading news online either.

When it comes to social networking, the French just aren’t that bothered it seems.

A new European wide “digital survey” ranked the French bottom of the 28-nation table when it comes to connectivity to social networks, like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The survey, called the "Digital Economy and Society Index", which was aimed at seeing how countries had advanced in the area, noted that the French are “very reluctant to have social activities online”.

Only 46 percent of France's internet users use social networks, which is the “weakest level in the whole of the EU”, where the average rate was 58 percent.

In Denmark, the country that topped the overall European table for “digital performance”, the rate of internet users on social networks reached 69 percent.

The survey also revealed the French were among the least likely nations to read news online, with France ranked 27th out of 28 nations.

The French are also not that into playing video games online either, with the country ranked 20th out of 28.

In terms of the overall rankings, which took into account the quality of internet connection and the development of public services online, France was placed 14th.

Its performance was ranked “average” along with the likes of Germany and Britain. While Denmark and Sweden topped the table, Bulgaria and Romania propped up the table.

France was also told it “must make progress” to boost its high speed internet connectivity, which “is limiting the ability of France to enjoy the benefits of the digital economy”.

One thing the French outdo the rest of Europe on is “Video on Demand”, a system which allows users to watch TV programs when they wish, rather than wait for the specific broadcast time.
