In pictures: Italians mock Isis on Twitter
Italians took to Twitter over the weekend to laugh off threats from the Isis militant group against their country, especially after one sympathizer said gays would be thrown off the iconic “Leaning Tower of Pizza”.
Isis has made a series of threats about conquering Rome and the Vatican.
In photoshopped images, the militant group has superimposed their black flag over the Colosseum and the obelisk in St Peter’s Square.
And last week it issued a warning in a chilling video, which showed the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians in Libya, that the north African country would be used as a springboard for attacks.
The threat raised fears, prompting the Italian government to boost security, but Italians themselves responded in the best possible way: sarcasm.
Taking over a hashtag created by Isis sympathizers - #We_Are_Coming_O_Rome - they flooded Twitter with tips about Italy, including where to avoid traffic bottlenecks and warning the terrorists not to mess with their Italian grandmothers.
There was also a flurry of amusing responses to an Isis supporter who referred to the Leaning Tower of Pisa as the “Leaning Tower of Pizza” and said the tower would be used to throw gays off.
