“An Oscar is an Oscar. This is the greatest reward that a filmmaker could want,” said France’s Alexandre Desplat after picking up a gong for the Best Original Film Score.

The French composer had a good chance of winning given that he was nominated for his work on two films – The Grand Budapest Hotel – for which he won the gong, and The Imitation Game.

Desplat, 53, becomes the seventh Frenchman to win the Oscar for Best Original Film Score, following in the footsteps of the likes of Ludovic Bource, who won the Academy Award in 2012 for The Artist.

Paris-born Desplat had been nominated for the prize several times before, including for the musical scores for the films The King's Speech and The Queen, but lost out both times.

French film maker Mathilde Bonnefoy also took home a gong for her work on CitizenFour, which claimed the Academy Award for the Best Documentary Feature.

As for the main prizes on the night, Birdman picked up Best Picture, Best Actor went to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything, Best Actress to Julian Moore for Still Alice and Alejandro Gonazalez Inarritu won the award for Best Director for the film Birdman.
