Ritchie was one of three men injured on Saturday during an encierro in Ciudad Rodrigo at the annual Carnaval del Toro festival, The Local has been told.

The experienced bull runner, who is a regular at the more famous running of the bulls festival in  Pamplona, was tossed by the bull on Saturday morning.

He was rushed to hospital where he had nine stiches in one side of his head and nine staples in the other.

His friend Daniel Hegarty gave an update on his condition on facebook: “I was asked to post a quick update. Gus tumbled today during the Encierro after some hard luck. 9 stitches in one side of his head and 9 staples in the other side, but he's laughing, drinking and singing. All good here,” he wrote.

In a later post, Ritchie wrote: “Everything is fine. My head has been split open, but the medics have done a great job. Thank you, everyone.”

During the same morning run, Benjamin Miller, 20, an American student, was gored multiple times receiving injures to his thigh, sphincter and back.

After three hours of surgery the American from Georgia was said to be "recovering well" in intensive care at a hospital in western Salamanca.

Enrique Crespo, the surgeon who operated on Miller, described the injuries, which included a wound measuring 40 centimeters, as "the biggest goring wound I´ve ever seen," according to a report on television channel Cuatro.
