The show called "Adam and Eve" will see contestants meeting and then dating "au naturel".

The programme was not made in France, which would have been a relief for contestants given the chilly temperatures, but on the island of Tikehau, a Polynesian atoll in the Pacific ocean.

Although the contestants' genitals will be pixellated, breasts and bottoms won't be blurred out.

In the programme the "couples" will go on a series of dates over three days until a surprise third candidate will come into the mix on the second day, to shake things up a little.

Xavier Gandon, who works for the channel D8, which will run the programme, said that the aim of naked dating on TV was "to create couples, not destroy them".

"The ultimate romantic experience where two people revisit the myth of the Garden of Eden," he said. "There is no money into the bargain: it is a way of making sure that people are sincerely looking for love," he told French newspaper Le Parisien.

Gandon argues that the channel "did not aim at being provocative" and that it tried "to make people more beautiful and film them at their best".

Although broadcasting nudity on television is hardly taboo in France, the show will mark the first time reality TV shows full nudity.

TV heads have recommended that children under the age of ten should not watch a programme, that was first created for the reality TV loving Dutch.

See a scene from the Dutch version. Warning: Contains full frontal nudity.

The US version of the programme - Dating Naked - which blurs out all sensitive parts of the body has proved so popular that it has been commissioned for a second season. One of the couples that met on the show even ended up getting married.

The exact release date of the French programme remains unknown, but organizers have promised that it will be aired in "a few weeks".

Reality TV shows have proved remarkably popular in France with shows like "The Angels of Reality TV" pulling in millions of viewers, partly thanks to stars such as Nabilla, who has billed herself as France's answer to Kim Kardashian and gone on to make a career for herself, before being charged with attempting to kill her boyfriend.
