Forecasters predict that strong winds will arrive in the south and south west if the country on Saturday, with the risk that a storm may develop.

"Winds will blow sharply in several places," Alexandra Ohlsson, duty meteorologist at Swedish weather agency SMHI told the TT news agency.

"In Halland and north-western Skåne there is the greatest risk of storms," she added, noting that Öland and Gotland should also expect winds of up to 25 metres per second.

A class two warning has been issued for the region on Saturday, the second highest alert possible.

Sleet is also expected in some parts of southern Sweden, with this turning to snow as the weather front pushes north.

"In some areas heavy snowfall is expected. This includes the southern Swedish highlands, Östergötland and in most places in Svealand," Ohlsson told TT.

Northern Sweden is set to experience fresh snow, with sharp winds along some parts of the coast around Norrland and temperatures dropping to as low as -20C.

Götaland is expected to be the warmest part of the country, with temperatures remaining above zero across the weekend.
