The same type of illegal firework that caused three deaths on New Year’s Eve was discovered in the playground of a Copenhagen daycare on Monday.

The explosive, a so-called chrysanthemum bomb, was discovered by a maintenance worker at the Gullandsgården institution in Amagerwho routinely checks the daycare’s outdoor areas before children arrive.

“We have a carpenter on staff who every morning checks the playground for things like broken glass, syringes and other things that can be dangerous for children, and this morning he saw a chrysanthemum bomb,” the daycare’s supervisor, Anne-Gitte Kleist, told Ritzau.

The man called the police, who came and cordoned off the area as they removed the undetonated firework.

In two separate incidents, chrysanthemum bombs caused three deaths in northern Jutland on New Year’s Eve. Since then, there have been reports of nearly 20  chrysanthemum bombs discovered in public places.

On Friday, a 29-year-old man from Hobro was arrested and jailed for selling a chrysanthemum bomb behind at least one of the New Year’s Eve deaths.
