New Year's Eve is upon us and 2014 is a year that was certainly worth giving a proper send off to for Germany (remember the time we won the World Cup?). Here are some options for a big Silvester, as the evening is known in Germany, night out in your city.

Berlin

The Hoff is coming! The Hoff is coming!

Germany's biggest party is in the capital in front of the Brandenburg Gate. The two-kilometre-long party features German favourites Tokio Hotel, rockstar violinist David Garrett and an AC/DC coverband called TNT. And we can't forget every Teuton's cult favourite, David Hasselhoff. At midnight, the fireworks go off to ring in 2015.  Entry is free and around 1 million people show up every year. Get there early and wear your warm coats: Gates open at noon on Wednesday.

And if you don't live in the Hauptstadt, you can always stay warm by the glow of the telly and watch it on ZDF.

Munich

Leave 2014 in the dust and partake in the 11th annual Silvester Run a 10-kilometre run at the Bavarian capital's Olympiapark.
Once you'vce caught your breath, head over to the Tollwood. With five seperate areas, each boasting its own musical acts and attraction, the Silvester auf dem Tollwood promises to be a party for everyone. Jamaram is headlining the party and there's a food plaza, so we're sold. Tickets will run you around €23 though.

Hamburg

The port city promises parties all over the place, but you're best to focus on the party mile along the Reeperbahn. The biggest party is being promised by Cafe Seeterrassen. For €28, you'll get access to six clubs with five dance floors and a karaoke bar. Party kicks off at nine and your ticket gets you a free glass of prosecco.

Düsseldorf

Head over to the Radisson Blu for what's promised to be Germany's biggest drag queen show on New Year's Eve. With German drag stars Elke Winter, Leslie London with Lilli and Chris Collier headlining the show, it promises to be an unforgettable evening for €99.

Cologne

All party hands on deck. In Cologne, you can take to the Rhein and raise your glass of Kölsch as fireworks go off over the Cathedral. Your €89 ticket includes all the Kölsch, wine and non-alcoholic delights, though sea legs are not included.

Stuttgart

With a 360-degree view of Stuttgart, the Silvester Party on the SkyBeach Parkdeck the city's biggest open-air party to ring in 2015. Wear warm clothes, they ask, because the party goes until 4am. But don't worry, there will be Gluhwein to help.

Your living room

It's the most frequently repeated TV programme of all time and if you want to celebrate like a German, put the bubbly in the fridge, get some tasteful sparklers (the pyrotechnic kind) at the ready and tune into Dinner for One. Der 90. Gerburtstag, as its known in German, is to Germany as apple pie is to America.

And with that, we here at The Local would like to wish you a Guten Rutsch, or a good slide, into the New Year and look forward to continuing to keep you informed over all things Germany in 2015.
