The giving spirit of Christmas is alive and well in Denmark.

Danes have contributed a record 7.15 million kroner to the annual Christmas campaign from charity Danish People’s Aid (Dansk Folkehjælp) that raises funds for families in need.

The record amount donated to the charity this holiday season will result in 5,000 families receiving extra help to celebrate the Christmas season. That’s about 100 more families than last year.

“A long-running focus on Christmas help has meant that Danes and businesses i Denmark are very aware that many people need help to be able to celebrate Christmas,” Danish People’s Aid spokesman Klaus Nørlem said.

“Our research shows that Danes quite simply want to help and contribute year after year. And companies this year have been particularly willing to contribute their share,” he continued.

Nørlem said that a phone campaign by business leaders on December 3rd brought in nearly 4 million kroner in just one hour.

The 7.1 million kroner raised this year marks the seventh straight year that the Christmas help collection has reached new heights. The annual charity drive has increased over ten-fold since 2007.

This year’s record campaign was carried out in collaboration with the tabloid Ekstra Bladet.
