The Danish government has announced a new plan meant to improve mobile and broadband connections nationwide, particularly in outlying areas.

Danes living in rural areas can look forward to improved phone coverage and faster internet speeds – eventually.

A proposal put forth on Monday calls for all households in Denmark to have access to broadband internet with minimum download speeds of 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 30Mbps by the year 2020.

The plan also calls for significantly improving phone signals in rural areas. The business and growth minister, Henrik Sass Larsen, said the new strategy is a continuation of earlier promises to improve connectivity for Danes.

“It will be slowly rolled out. We are already doing that now by rolling out some of our tenders from 2012, when we measured the 207 postal codes with the worst coverage and arranged for them to be covered better,” Larsen told TV2.

The telecommunications consultancy Netplan said it was about time that the Danish government worked to improved connectivity but said it was unambitious to only shoot to have the projects completed by 2020.

“It is fine that it has now been acknowledged that there is a problem that needs fixed, but this plan comes all too late. Danes are already being bypassed by technical progress and it is too late to do something about it in 2020,” Netplan’s CEO, Torben Rune, told TV2.

Part of the plan calls for telecommunications companies to allow share each other’s systems in order to provide better coverage to customers.

The government will also launch a website, tjekditnet.dk, that will allow customers to test their connection speeds and see how they compare to other areas in the country.

A study released last month showed that Denmark has overtaken South Korea as the world's top country for cellphone and Internet use.
