A dog's frantic barking triggered a call to police in Salzburg district on Wednesday night, that most likely saved the life of a 35-year-old Flachgauer man.

The Salzburg Regional Police Directorate reported that they received reports of a dog barking loudly in front of the Rainer Glasenbach military barracks, with a man laying motionless nearby.

When the rescue first-responders arrived, they were unable to get near the man, because his Labrador dog was forcefully guarding his unconscious body.

It was only when a police dog handler arrived that the valiant dog could be calmed down, allowing the paramedics to begin resuscitation.

The man was found to still be alive, but was unresponsive and was taken to hospital, where police report that he is already recovering quickly.

Had the man remained undetected and exposed to the intense cold for much longer, his condition would most likely have been much worse.

Meanwhile, the man's identity could be quickly discovered by police, because the Labrador led police directly back to his home address.
