Nearly half of the number of foreigners - 43.6 percent - are at risk of poverty or social exclusion in Italy.

The rate is far lower for Italians, with 26.4 percent of locals facing the same risk, according to new figures from EU statistics agency Eurostat.

Taking a closer look at the figures, there is also a difference between Europeans in Italy and those from outside the EU.

Non-EU foreigners, known as “extracomunitari” in Italian, are significantly more at risk of poverty than Europeans. Whereas EU citizens’ exclusion rate is 36.8 percent, this jumps to 46.7 percent for non-Europeans.

This difference is, however, less stark in Italy than elsewhere in the region. The rate for Europeans living in other EU countries is 28.1 percent, compared to 48.7 percent for non-EU citizens.

Locals in other European countries fare better than Italians do at home, with an average 22.8 percent of adults being at risk of poverty or social exclusion across EU countries where data was available.
