A disused military barracks near the spa town of Baden, 26 km south of Vienna, is on the market for a bargain starting price of €33.1 million.

The Martinek barracks have been empty since the end of 2013 and were being considered as possible accommodation for refugees, but Baden’s mayor Kurt Staska said it was “unthinkable” to have a second large centre just 5 km from the overcrowded asylum quarters in Traiskirchen.

The barracks are up for auction online and bids can be placed until February 27th. If you paid the starting price each square metre would cost €83. The property has a total of 402,000 square metres and 50 buildings. The real estate consulting and development company Sivbeg is managing the sale.

The property is being advertised on the online sales site willhaben.at and is the most expensive real estate on offer there. A villa in St Tropez or California costs around €30 million.

The barracks is a listed property but could be developed into a mix of residential properties, office units and cultural and recreational facilities. It is located 1.5km from the centre of Baden, which is known for its thermal baths and vineyards.
