Once upon a time, Norway was a poor country. Mocked and looked down upon by its rich Nordic neighbours.

They thought they were doing ever so well. Experts in commerce, invention and beacons to the world in how to rule democratically.

Poor, forgotten Norway. It just plodded along, not really famous for much, other than herring and a few gloomy Ibsen plays.

Then came the country's oil boom in the 1970s and Norway got rich beyond its wildest dreams!

Its Nordic neighbours could only look on with envy, as, decade after decade, Norway just got richer and richer until its rulers amassed a considerable fortune, and even most of the country’s loyal subjects became wealthier than they could ever have dreamt.

But it didn’t stop there. Norwegians began to build a country that was top for quality of life across many aspects, and soon the little Nordic state began to rank with the very best in the world as a great place to live, work and visit.

Money can buy education and health, and Norway’s latest generation of citizens have kick-started a renaissance in more lofty areas of society.

Discover in our image gallery how several key Norwegians have risen to the very best in their field for sport, business, the arts, politics and humanitarian work. In short, they have become world-beaters.

In particular, Norway has unleashed the potential of its young people, has an open immigration policy, and looks after its ageing and vulnerable population like few other countries in the world. It has asserted itself as a place where everybody is welcome and afforded the freedom to follow their dreams.

It may have a few downsides - like the unpredictable weather or the price of a loaf of bread or a pint of beer making your eyes bulge in disbelief, but there are so many other things to make you realize that Norway is truly king of the world!

So, check out our gallery to discover in what and why Norway is doing so well.
