The winter is definitely baring its teeth around Sweden, so what better time to get out to some Christmas markets?

Festive treats can be bought from stalls in southern Sweden's Huseby, Steninge Slott near Stockholm (where the market opens on Saturday), and a big one at the Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg which starts on Friday and runs until the end of the year.

All the markets promise Swedish arts and crafts, food and drinks, and attractions and fun.

Meanwhile, Gothenburg will be graced by pop royalty on Friday when none other than Elton John hits Scandinavium arena. The Rocket Man will be playing one show only.

If excellent music isn't your idea of a good night in Gothenburg, the acclaimed "The Woman in Black" is showing on Tuesday night - in English - after 25 years on West End.

There are some cool gigs on the way for Stockholm too, including Opeth in the Munchen Bryggeriet on Saturday night, and Australian band Angus & Julia Stone at Berns on Sunday.

Let's not forget that Umeå in the north is nearing the end of its year as Culture Capital of Europe. As usual, there's plenty to choose from this week, including the Norrland Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, and a slew of cultural shows from Sami Heritage to jazz.

And let's not forget that Stockholm's International Film Festival is still running until Sunday 16th - why not pop down and check out some quality foreign films. You may have missed Uma Thurman, but there's still plenty to see.
