Drivers all get frustrated when their car won't start, but a man in northern Italy was so angry when his new Fiat 500 wouldn't get going that he decided to smash it up with a pickaxe.

In the process, the 34-year-old from Lissone, north of Milan, smashed a back window, ripped off one of the wing mirrors and hit the car over 100 times, Corriere della Sera reported.

Alarmed neighbours called the police, who arrived and waited for a few minutes until the driver stopped hitting the Fiat.

When approached by a police officer, the man handed over the pickaxe. The driver was accompanied to hospital, while the car taken to a mechanic’s, Corriere said.

A similar incident in southern Italy happened last year, when a restaurateur in Salerno allowed a group of Russian customers to smash up his car with a sledgehammer. The tourists reportedly left a tip of “a few hundred euros” and promised to return.
