The National Property Board of Sweden revealed new details in the 25-year restoration plan of Stockholm's royal palace.

"It will be repainted in a warm, reddish yellow tone," Malin Myrin, project manager at the board, told The Local.

The restoration, which is estimated to be complete in 2036, has already seen years of work on the building's facade.

"It's only the facade that's getting renovated and it's mainly because of the age of the stones. They're finely decorated, but they are heavily weathered. There have even been parts falling down," Myrin added.

The National Property Board's choice of colour wasn't welcomed by everyone.

"Their decision to paint the palace in what they call 'warm pink' - or what the rest of us call beige-brown - is a historic mistake," Madeleine Sjöstedt of the Liberal Party said in a statement.

She added that Stockholmers prefer a yellow colour, which would be more in line with the architect's original plans.

"The board should reconsider this eyesore of an idea before it's too late."

The palace has seen its share of renovations over its 300-year history, including  a major rebuild following an major fire in the 17th century.

Project Manager Myrin promised that the continued restoration work wouldn't detract from the overall tourist experience.

The royal palace, located in Stockholms Gamla Stan (Old Town), is the official residence of Sweden's King Carl Gustav XVI.
