The IT director of Nav (Norwegian benefits system), Nina Aulie, quit her job abruptly on Monday prompting a government investigation as to why.

Aulie left her post blaming difficult working conditions within the organization. Now the Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion has asked for a report into the incident.

Sources in Nav said Aulie packed her stuff and left after sending out an email where she writes about her own working conditions as being very difficult and her experience of a relentless pressure from management.

Aulie supposedly received a message that she was to be transferred after an external evaluation where she claimed she was made a scapegoat. She believed the report is incomplete and based on incorrect assumptions.

Director of Nav, Joakim Lystad, confirmed Aulie's resignation, but did not give any details as to why. In an email to Nav staff in Aulie’s department, he wrote: “I can confirm that we have had a disagreement. There has been ongoing discussion for a long time between Nina and I about the leadership of the IT department.”

Lystad said that the mentioned external evaluation is not finished, and that it is just a part of the picture. He has asked the chief of staff in the IT department of Nav, Grete Heen, to act as director of IT in the short term.

Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion, Robert Eriksson, had contacted Lystad and wants a full report on the case, according to “Dagens Næringsliv”. Eriksson said to the newspaper: “In light of the current development, where the IT director has resigned with immediate effect, I have asked the director of labour and welfare about information on the case.”

At the same time as Eriksson wants an update on which measures are taken in Nav, he stated he will not get involved in staff disputes.

The minister said: “It is important for me to be secure that the measures taken don’t affect the speed or the quality of the IT modernization within the department.”

Aulie’s job was viewed by many as one of the most demanding IT jobs in Norway. She has appeared several times on Computerworld's list of the most powerful people in the Norwegian IT industry.
