A man in central Sweden has gone on a rampage with a chainsaw after a family housing dispute took an unexpected turn.

The 47-year-old man thought he would be able to buy his parents' holiday house in Lidköping, but found out that the property would go to his older brother instead.

The man then decided to take matters into his own hands and, armed with a chainsaw, set about demolishing the house.

He caused 710,000 kronor ($98,000) in damage to the building, destroying the facade, the interior, and the electrics, reported the TT news agency.

He even sawed down 20 trees in the garden.

On Tuesday, Skaraborg district court charged the Swede with causing serious damage and even theft, as he took a heater from the bathroom during the spree, which occurred in January.

The man has since told police that he considered himself to have been the rightful owner of the property, which he claimed justified his actions. He added that he also had a right to cut down the trees as it was him who had planted them, reported the Expressen newspaper.
