The number of visitors to Sweden exceeded 25 million for the first time, measured in overnight stays in hotels, cabins and hostels in the country during June, July and August.

"Tourism is an important industry for Sweden's economy," said Gunilla Nordlöf, director-general at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth which compiled the report based on Statistics Sweden figures.

The report shows that tourist numbers climbed 3.4% in comparison with the same period in 2013. Foreign tourists accounted for the biggest boost, climbing 6.6 percent while domestic tourism increased by 2.1 percent.

Dalarna in central Sweden is the county which has benefited the most from the climb, showing a 14.1% hike in overnight stays, followed by Stockholm and Jämtland. In revenue terms, Stockholm climbed the most - by 4.1% to 1.98 billion kronor ($274 million).

The biggest increase in tourist numbers came from Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Slovak tourists also seem to have opened their eyes to Sweden as a holiday destination, with visitors from the country climbing a full 179% between 2013 and 2014.
