A Majorca judge has banned a Senegalese man from entering Spain for a period of five years after he tried to steal less than €20 ($25,67) worth of meat from a supermarket.

Twenty-six-year-old Libasse N. attempted to steal the meat trays by sticking them under his jumper and paying only for a packet of pastries at the till, online daily Última Hora reported.

But the young man was caught out by one of the cashiers, who held on to him while she tried to pull the stolen goods from under his clothes.

The Majorca court heard how Libasse N. dragged the woman as he tried to exit the supermarket, finally throwing the pastries at her face when she managed to grab the second meat tray.

He was charged with violent robbery and sentenced to five months in prison, a conviction which has been swapped to a five-year ban from entering Spain once he is extradited as he doesn’t hold a legal residency permit.

The Senegalese man will also have to pay €150 ($192) to the supermarket cashier for the injuries she sustained.

Many Sub-Saharan migrants in Spain survive by either begging outside supermarkets or selling counterfeit DVDs and football tops in the streets.
