Almost 7,000 nurses - many from Southern Italy - have applied for just two jobs in the northern cities of Vicenza and Padua. The influx has sparked the anger of Veneto's president who said that priority should be given to regional applicants.

A total of 6,923 men and women turned up in Vicenza and Padua on Wednesday to apply for just two nursing jobs – both of them boasting permanent contracts.

Many of the applicants were from southern Italy, La Stampa reported, with some arriving on coaches organized by agencies that specialize in transporting southern applicants to job competitions in the north.

Quoted in the paper, Veneto’s President Luca Zaia said that by allowing candidates from other regions to apply for such jobs was “stifling the aspirations of many of our young, enthusiastic and highly trained young people” in the Veneto.

He added that young people from Veneto should be given priority over other applicants.

“In Veneto, we have more than 200,000 unemployed people and we do not want to create any more,” he was quoted in La Stampa as saying.

“These competitions need to be regionalized, giving priority to residents,” Zaia added, before urging Veneto’s regional parliament to take action.

The final candidate will be selected for the job in Padova on October 7th while the Vicenza applicant will be chosen on September 30th.

This isn’t the first time thousands of people have applied for relatively fewer positions.

Last year Swedish furniture giant Ikea attracted 28,616 applications for just 200 jobs at its new store in Pisa.

Meanwhile, in Spain last December, Ikea’s computer servers crashed after 20,000 people applied for jobs at a new store in the country.
