The tenth annual QS rankings of world universities named the University of Copenhagen as the best in Denmark, placing it at number 45 globally. That position was enough to make the university the highest-ranking in the Nordic nations, with the closest competitor being Sweden's Lund University at number 60.

The only other Danish university to crack the top 100 was Aarhus University, which QS put at number 96.

The Technical University of Denmark was not too far behind at number 123, while the other two Danish entries on the QS list were the University of Southern Denmark at number 308 and Aalborg University at number 363.

The minister for higher education and research, Sofie Carsten Nielsen, told The Local that she was satisfied with Denmark's positions on the list.

"In Denmark we need universities with educations and research of a high quality. That is one of the keys to Denmark succeeding in the future. I'm pleased that the Danish universities generally perform well in international rankings, including here in the latest QS ranking, where Denmark has two universities in the top 100 and a total of five universities on the list," she said.

The QS rankings were more generous to Danish universities than the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) released in July

The CWUR ranked the University of Copenhagen at number 79, making it the only Danish school in the top 100.

The top university in the QS ranking was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The QS World University Rankings annually rate 800 universities, based on measures including academic reputation, reputation among employers, citations, mentoring and student performance. The full rankings can be viewed here
