Appearing before the regional court in Düsseldorf, Yanquing T. said: “I killed three people and injured four. I deeply regret my actions and I’m prepared to accept any legal punishment.

"I want to apologize especially to the victims and all those affected.”

The chef was charged with triple murder, attempted murder and arson.

He went on the rampage in the western city on February 28th, storming the offices of a law firm and opening fire. He set fire to the office after stabbing a woman to death and injuring a man and a woman.

The father-of-two then made his way to another law firm ,12 kilometres east of Düsseldorf, and killed another woman and injured a man.

One of the injured men, a 51-year-old lawyer, died later. The two women victims were aged 50 and 54.

“I came here in 1996 from China seeking security, happiness and freedom in Germany, Instead I’ve become a murderer,” he said.

The 49-year-old tried to kill himself after the rampage but the gun didn’t fire.

He said he became frustrated after becoming unemployed and not being paid wages owed to him.

His employers also didn’t pay their share of his social security contributions. He took legal action against his former bosses and won but then still did not receive the money. “I suffered countless setbacks,” he said.

The father was also attacked by a work colleague who then claimed to have been beaten by Yanquing. Yanquing lost the subsequent legal case and lost patience with his lawyers.

He targeted the lawyers who were supposed to help him in his cases, going on the rampage with two guns, two knives and a can of gasoline. “I just wanted to prove my innocence,” he said.

A psychiatrist said they found him to be aggressive and have a victim mentality, but added there was no sign of diminished responsibility for his actions.

He will be sentenced at a later date.
