A 21-year-old carpenter in Tyrol has survived a horrific accident at work after shooting a steel nail into his upper abdomen.

He was working alone on a roof on a construction site in the district of Schwaz, with a pneumatic nail gun, when he stumbled and fell. A nail punctured his upper abdomen and damaged his liver.

He was in such pain he couldn’t climb down from the roof via a ladder and his colleagues had to form a rescue chain and carry him down. He was taken to Innsbruck Hospital for emergency surgery and doctors say he is in a stable condition and able to speak.

In another gruesome accident a worker at an insulation company in Styria was seriously injured when two cubes of compressed cellulose, each weighing one tonne, fell on him. The 23-year-old was stacking the cubes in Hartberg-Fürstenfeld when two fell and crushed him.

A colleague came to his rescue and lifted the cubes with the help of a stacker truck.

The injured man was taken to Hartberg hospital and a workplace investigation is underway to find out what went wrong.
