Teachers Rosa Ambrosio, 38, Giovanna Donnarumma, 39, and 59-year-old Carmela Graziano have been put under house arrest over the alleged abuse, La Repubblica reported.

Between them they are accused of 66 incidents of abuse against pupils at the Vincenzo Russo school in Palma Campania, east of Naples.

Police were brought into the school after a mother of two pupils complained that the children had come home with bruises and other injuries.

Investigators then set up hidden cameras in classrooms and reportedly documented repeated physical and verbal attacks against children. Disabled pupils were among the victims who were allegedly pushed, slapped and insulted by the teachers.

In Rome earlier this summer an Italian politician called for an investigation after reports that a disabled child had been abused at a school. The boy was said to have suffered physical and verbal abuse and was locked in a classroom to “calm down”.
