Suspected Ebola case ruled out in Sweden
UPDATED: Officials at a Stockholm hospital reported that they had found a suspected case of the Ebola virus on Sunday night. But the case was dismissed on Monday.
The patient was being held in isolation at the Karolinska Hospital after he returned from Africa with a high body temperature.
A hospital spokesman said on Sunday that doctors couldn't risk ruling out Ebola.
However, by Monday morning the hospital staff had ruled out the possibility of the virus.
"There are no signs whatsoever that the patient has been infected by Ebola," Åke Örtsqvist, a specialist in infection control responsible for the Stockholm area, told the Expressen newspaper. He had previously said that the risk of an Ebola outbreak in Sweden was "very low". "The virus is not airborne, but is spread among humans through direct or indirect contact via blood and other fluids," he said in a statement.
Ebola has infected more than 2,600 people and killed over 1,400 since reemerging in west Africa this year.
It has a fatality rate of up to 90 percent according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), but during the current outbreak the survival rate has been 47 percent.
The virus is transmitted by direct contact with blood and body fluids.
