Italian woman cleared of Ebola in Turkey
An Italian woman who was hospitalized in Turkey last week does not have the deadly Ebola virus and will return home soon, Italian media has reported.
The Italian woman became ill on a flight to Turkey’s Istanbul Ataturk Airport on Friday and was taken to hospital for tests.
She has now been cleared of the Ebola virus, which as of Friday had killed an estimated 1,427 people in West Africa. The Italian woman has also been cleared of malaria, Tgcom24 said.
While early reports said the woman had been travelling from Nigeria, where five people have died from Ebola, Italian media on Tuesday said she had been flying to Turkey from Chad.
En route to Istanbul she suffered from sickness and a high fever, both symptoms of the Ebola virus, although is now thought to have had a stomach bug.
The woman had been taking part in a three-week trip organized by a missionary centre in Modena, Tgcom24 reported. A male friend she had been travelling with was also put under medical supervision, although both have now been cleared to go home.
