Firefighters push to get Swedes back home
UPDATED: After intense firefighting for 11 days and some much-needed rain, the fire ravaging Sweden's forests is finally under control. Emergency workers are working on getting people back home.
"We're switching focus now and toning down the aerial work," Lars-Göran Uddholm, who is leading the fire fighting team, told the TT news agency.
He added that the new focus was to work on clearing the roads in order to get around 200 Swedes back to their homes.
The rains that moved in on Monday morning were a godsend, one emergency worker said.
"We're so glad for the abundance of rain," said Maja Geffen, spokeswoman at the emergency centre in Ramnäs. "We're really thanking the rain gods on this one."
On Monday about 250 people were still fighting the fire, and the area was still cloaked in smoke.
The water-bombing planes from France and Italy left Sweden on Monday.
