Seventy British tourists are suing travel giants Thomson and Thomas Cook after they fell seriously ill with stomach bugs brought on by the food served at hotels on the Spanish holiday islands of Majorca and Menorca.

Holidaymakers at Menorca’s Stil Victoria Playa hotel described “horror movie” scenes as guests suffered from terrible vomiting and diarrhoea.

One tourist wrote about his stay at the hotel on travel website Trip Advisor under the headline “Worst hotel ever DIRTY”, later stating “Absolutely repulsed by this hotel! Dirty, smelly place; corridors smelt like sewage and not surprising as everyone seemed to have a sickness bug!”.

A total of 20 tourists were struck down while staying at the Menorca hotel last month as part of a package deal with Thomson, The Independent reported.

“The food was poor throughout our stay and some food from the snack bar was terrible with chicken kebabs undercooked,” holidaymaker Susan B told the Daily Mail.

“We all became ill with the sickness bug with my four-year-old son getting it the worst. Eventually we had to pay 120 euros to see the local doctor in the resort and pay for medicines.”

More recently, another 50 British holidaymakers in neighbouring Majorca had a similarly nightmarish stay at Club Mac Alcudia, chosen for them by global holiday operation Thomas Cook.

“It was just a nightmare,” mother-of-two Emma Watkins told The Independent about how her three-year-old daughter had to be put on a drip while in hospital recovering from her stomach bug.

The disgruntled tourists have accused both tour operators of turning a blind eye to the issue and now plan on taking legal action against them through compensation firm Your Holiday Claims.

Thomson and Thomas Cook both argue they take health issues very seriously and will be looking into the matter.
