The German citizen was on the run after being wanted for the murder of an elderly man and the attempted murder of a 17-year-old girl in Germany. Both incidents took place just hours after Germany won the World Cup and on the open streets of Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria.

The murder victim was mugged and then killed a few hours after the World Cup final. As most of Germany celebrated their victory, the 72-year- old retired man left a bar and was attacked.

On the same night, just after 3am, a teenage girl was making her way home from a restaurant in Bad Reichenhall when she was mugged and stabbed with a knife. She survived the attack, but was seriously injured.

A 20-year-old man was arrested in Åstfjorden in South-Trøndelag by Norwegian police. He was taken into police custody at 5.35pm on the 714 county road at Åstfjorden, police said to NTB.

German police contacted Kripos (National Criminal Investigation Service of Norway) and gave information that the man could be in Norway. German authorities had offered a reward of 170,000 kroner ($27,000) for his capture.

A police statement read: “The operation is described as successful and no one was injured in connection to the arrest. The man has been brought back to the detention centre in Trondheim.”

The man will be retained in custody in Norway, pending his return to Germany for trial.

It is thought he is a former elite soldier from the German military, said “Dagbladet”. He is charged for murder and attempt to murder on the 14th July this year.
