Summer storms may cause winter house fires

Norwegian home owners are warned lightning bolts, such as experienced during the recent storms, may cause house fire several months later, said the Norwegian Fire Protection Association.
This summer, lightning bolts have caused forest fires in several sites across Norway. But lightning may also cause fire in Norwegian homes, long after people forget about the bad weather this summer.
Director of the Norwegian Fire Protection Association, Dagfinn Kalheim, said to NTB: “As a consequence of damage from lightning bolts, electrical equipment may catch fire. The fire could break out several months after the thunderstorm.” Lightning bolts can lead to an overcharge in the electrical system of houses. Every time an electrical surge runs through a house, electrical equipment can become damaged. Kalheim said: “Equipment like PCs, TVs and fridges might get a punch. Damage to electrical components may lead to fire.” Some days this summer, lightning struck down more than 100,000 times, according to SINTEF Energy, which also keeps record of lightning bolt activity. Bad weather has hit many parts of Norway during the last few days and lightning bolts have illuminated the night sky in South-East Norway.
