Four Danes were involved in a fatal diving accident off the western coast of Norway on Monday.

While diving with three other Danes near Haakonsvern, a 51-year-old man lost his life due to decompression sickness.

“What happened is that the first two divers hopped in and began their dive. The third diver hopped in, but quickly returned to the surface. The remaining diver in the boat quickly realized that something was wrong with his friend and sounded the alarm,” Morten Kronen from the Hordaland Police, told TV2 News.

The Danish man was pulled to shore, but police and rescue personnel were unable to save his life.

Norwegian police confirmed the death shortly after 3pm on Monday.

The Norwegian newspaper Bergens Tidende reported that the area where the Danes were diving is one of the most dangerous in Norway due to World War II era wreckage.
