Pensioner sets self alight in care home protest
An 89-year-old man died over the weekend in Genoa after setting himself on fire, in protest at being sent to live in a care home.
The pensioner’s body was found by a nurse after he set himself on fire in a bathroom, Il Messaggero reported on Sunday.
The unnamed man reportedly left a suicide note on his bed, in which he explained that he did not want to live in the care home. His partner, an Alzheimer’s sufferer, had been sent for treatment at a facility outside of the region.
Italy has seen a spate of self-immolations in recent months, with another man setting himself on fire just last week.
The 68-year-old man committed suicide in L’Aquila, leaving a letter in which he said he had been tormented ever since the city was struck by a devastating earthquake in 2009.
