Police in Saxony discovered 11 large cannabis plants on Wednesday growing on a grass bank next to a busy motorway.

While mowing the grass bank by Autobahn 4 at Seifersdorf, near Görlitz, maintenance workers discovered 11 unusual plants, nearly 1.5 metres high, growing on a green strip next to the road.

Saxony police confirmed on Thursday that the plants were cannabis, not yet in the harvest stage.

It appears that the unidentified grower had visited his plants frequently and had put a significant amount of effort into nourishing them.

They were "planted in pairs several metres apart and surrounded with fertilizer," said police. A trail had been worn into the field and farmland leading to the site.

The grower likely thought the plants would go unnoticed as drivers sped by on the busy motorway.

Police dug up the illegal foliage and took away to be investigated.
