Spain's traffic department is gearing up for the first wave of summer traffic on Friday with around four million trips expected this weekend as Spaniards set off on their annual holidays.

Traffic will be heavier than usual on many of the nation's roads this weekend, but Spain's traffic directorate (DGT) will be on hand from 3pm, with 8,000 agents hoping to ensure the smooth and safe flow of traffic.

Heavy vehicles of over 7,500 kg will be limited to certain roads and will only be able to travel at certain times.

The special regime will be in place until 12am Monday, the DGT said in a statement.

As many as 79 million trips are expected in July and August as Spaniards take their traditional summer holidays with  recent European figures showing that 92 percent of trips made by Spaniards are within the country.

Spain's roads will also be made busier by the presence of foreign tourists — the country is the popular travel and business destination for EU residents.
