A passer-by discovered a whimpering cardboard box at the side of a road in the district of Braunau in Upper Austria in the middle of June. He opened it up to discover five adorable puppies, which had been abandoned in the 34 degree heat.

The passer-by contacted the animal welfare group, Pfotenhilfe Lochen (the Lochen Paw Help), who took the puppies into their care.

According to Sascha Sautner, spokesman of the group, the puppies were initially disturbed after being taken from their mother and abandoned, but after being looked after for a while by the group, they were now healthy and in good condition.

"It is inconceivable how someone can be so heartless, and can cram five adorable puppies in a small box and then allow them to stand at 34 degrees easily in the sun," he said.  Furthermore, with the holiday season, many animal shelters are already at full capacity, as lots of pets are being abandoned.

Irresponsible owners will sometimes abandon pets at holiday times so they can take their vacation, and not worry about making arrangements for someone to care for them.

Apart from the fact that abandoning pets is a breach of the law (§ 222 paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code), the experience for a dog of being abandoned is particularly bad.

When a dog loses his home, it means especially for dogs a tremendous amount of stress, said Sautner.  "Such a sudden disappearance of the reference person has for the poor animal most traumatic consequences."

The five puppies left in a box were fortunate to be found so quickly, before dehydration could set in.

"Now the kids are looking for a new home. They are now very affectionate and lively dogs. All five are healthy, and very much longing for a new home and a caregiver, with whom they can build trust."
