IN PICTURES: Spain's festival of fire
Beach bonfires, athletic horses and satirical wax figures took over many corners of Spain on Monday and Tuesday night to mark St. John's Eve (San Juan), a popular celebration around the world which calls in the arrival of summer.
It may be a big global party from Canada to Sweden, but nobody quite celebrates St John’s Eve or Midsummer with as much diversity and life as the Spanish.
Beach revellers from ‘costa’ to ‘costa’ stay up all night diving over bonfires they’ve lit and burning belongings they can do without.
In the eastern city of Alicante, huge wax figures depicting famous figures are also set alight much the same as in neighbouring Valencia’s Fallas festival.
And on the Balearic island of Minorca the spectacle is jaw-dropping as thoroughbred horses dance on their hind legs through the packed city streets as partygoers try to pat them on the chest for good luck.
