Davide Frigatti, 33, was arrested close to Milan’s Parco Nord on Tuesday afternoon, Corriere della Sera reported.
Minutes before he had been filmed by someone in a car walking naked and screaming: “I am a free man, a free man. I want to shout to the whole world, to the whole world. I am a free man.”
Frigatti was arrested on suspicion of murder after 51-year-old Franco Mercadante was stabbed to death earlier that afternoon. Two other men were taken to hospital in a serious condition after being attacked separately in northern Milan.
Mercadante was running a car wash when he was killed at around 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon, Corriere said. An employee told the newspaper he heard screams and “followed the traces of blood” to where he saw a man escaping on foot.
Around 15 minutes earlier Francesco S, 55, was found seriously injured at the cash desk of the petrol station where he worked. CCTV footage reportedly showed a man attacking him.
Little more than an hour earlier, a 68-year-old pensioner was stabbed nearby. Named by the newspaper as Dario D, he was crossing the street on his bicycle when he was attacked and stabbed multiple times. He was found by a passerby who called an ambulance, Corriere said.
The motive for the attacks is unknown and Frigatti is not thought to have any connections to any criminal gangs or have a history of mental illness.
The stabbings happened little over a year after three people were killed when a man when on a rampage with a pickaxe in the city. Mada Kabobo was in April found guilty of the Milan murders and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
