Day-care rape suspect confesses in court
The 21-year-old man charged with aggravated sex crimes against children at a daycare has confessed to the charges, and called his internship there a "golden opportunity".
A man accused of child rape and child porn was revealed to be mentally sound on Wednesday, making him accountable for all 20 charges. He has also admitted to his crimes. The trial began on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old was officially charged last week at the Kalmar District Court in southern Sweden. A preliminary investigation indicated that the man may suffer from mental illness, but further investigation which concluded on Wednesday determined that was not the case.
The man was arrested on April 4th, and parts of his preliminary interrogation a few days later have now been released. He described his internship as "a golden chance", news agency TT reported.
"I've lived on what I could get my hands on online. They haven't been 'lucid' children, so to speak," the 21-year-old said.
The man admitted to the charges early on, but did not agree that his crimes should be classified as aggravated assault. He said he was not surprised to be arrested.
"I knew that it would end like this, so we might as well get on with it."
The man's internship began on January 27th, and he allegedly began sexually abusing the children at the daycare the same day. His crimes were only unearthed on April 3rd, when a four-year-old went home and informed her parents what had happened.
Police confiscated just under 600 pictures and over 200 films from the man's computer. Around half of the images and films were deemed to be aggravated instances of child porn.
So far the parents of twelve children have submitted damages claims to the court. In total the man may have to pay up to 1,6 million kronor ($241,100) in compensation to the families.
