Vienna's public transport workers will be holding a demonstration against violence against personnel on Friday.

The Wiener Linien (Vienna public transport system) was due to halt services for three minutes, starting at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The initiative was supposed to make passengers aware of the repeated attacks on public transport personnel in the past few months.

Several serious crimes were committed against public transport workers in 2014. Last week, a 33-year-old tram driver was severely injured at the end station of the 46 tram in Vienna's 16th district (Ottakring). He was hit over the head with a sharp object from behind, and needed an emergency operation.

Last year, 77 employees were attacked. According to the Wiener Linien, these attacks ranged from insults and being spat at to physical violence.

Last week, €2 million was presented for additional protective measures. "The attacks on our colleagues must stop", said employee representative Michael Bauer.
