The new Viennese suburb of Seestadt will have its own multi-denominational Campus of Religions, according to a report from Vatican Radio.

The establishment of a "Campus of religions" is planned for the new Viennese city district "Aspern Urban Lakeside".

This was confirmed by the head of the diocesan building department, Harald Gnilsen, on Tuesday according to the "Catholic Press."

The intention is that  each religious community will get  their own sacred spaces and houses of worship.

Gnilsen emphasized that each religious community has its own identity and rituals.

In addition to the individual religious venues, spaces for socializing and charitable activities are planned.

The aim is to build strong community ties among the planned 25,000 residents of Seestadt.

Both the Christian churches, as well as the representatives of other religious communities view the project positively.

The city of Vienna has paid the Archdiocese five years ago a grant of 250,000 euros for the construction of a church in the seaside town of Aspern.  Due to delays with the issuing of permits and other legal hurdles, this project could not yet be implemented.

It's unlikely, however, that space will be allocated for a Pastafarian house of worship.

Central Railway Room of Silence

In the new Vienna Central Railway Station there is currently another multi-denominational project in planning - a "Room of Silence".

"In cooperation with the Protestant and the Catholic Orthodox Church, we will establish a Christian-dominated space, which will be jointly operated," explains Gnilsen.

With this new presence at the Central Railway Station, a place of reflection for travelers, people with concerns, as well as people who work in the many new workplaces will be created.  A similar concept to the "Campus of religions" already exists in Berlin - the "House of Religions".
