A distinctive new floating swimming pool opened in Geneva on Wednesday night — at an opportune time, given the city's ongoing heatwave.

The new pool at Pont de la Machine, called L'amarr@GE, pays homage to the Swiss flag, with three bathing areas joined to form a cross, set within a red square.

It opened on a day when Genevans experienced a fifth day in a row with high temperatures hitting or exceeding 30 degrees.

The pool is the result of a design competition launched in the run-up to May 2015, the bicentenary of Geneva’s accession to the Swiss Confederation.

Stephanie Auger, general coordinator of GE200, which is organizing the bicentenary celebrations, told newspaper 20 Minutes: “We put out a call for projects in eight different areas, including urban art. We received 120 pitches and accepted 20, of which this is one.”

The 900-square-metre pool can accommodate up to 350 bathers, with entry costing two francs for adults and one franc for children.

It will remain open until the end of September, before reopening next summer.

GE200 is organizing a number of events for the bicentenary, which will also be celebrated at this year’s Fêtes de Genève, from July 17th to August 10th.
