EU president debate 'regrettable spectacle'
Chancellor Werner Faymann of the Social Democrats (SPÖ) has sharply criticised the Europe-wide scuffle over the next EU Commission president.
It was a "regrettable spectacle" at the expense of EPP (European People's Party) candidate, former Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker.
On Wednesday, Faymann also criticised the "vocabulary" used by British Prime Minister David Cameron in his attacks on Juncker.
The "insults" to Juncker in the British press should also be condemned, said Faymann. Juncker was a legitimate candidate for Commission president, despite some people not wanting to remember that Juncker ran as top candidate in the EU parliamentary elections, aiming for the presidency.
The Austrian chancellor also said that he hoped there would be a decision soon. Vice-Chancellor Michael Spindelegger of the conservative People's Party (VP) said that Juncker was an "excellent candidate for Commission president".
